This week’s Minute 91will be dedicated to what’s new in the world of World Cup Qualifying South Africa 2010. As this week at SOCCER AA is a slow one for news with only the teams that are still competiting for this year’s State Cup training hard for their next opponents. So, We’ll start with Europe’s Champion who in their double encounter with a very tough opponent like Turkey came out with two wins under their belt, although not playing their jogo bonito, Spain’s undefeated streak continues towards history. The World Cup Champions had no trouble with Montenegro beating them 2-0 in their first meeting and tying a tough and wiry Ireland team 1-1 leaving them 2 points ahead of Ireland who is close on their heels.
In other European news we have the double wins of France both by 1-0 margins over their opponents who despite a lackluster appearance was able to establish itself as the leader in their group classification for Africa 2010. Germany continues to demonstrate its dominance in the soccer world with two solid performances, Holland and England are showing the world that they too are in it for the long run, confirming Beckham’s wise decision to move to first league competition in Milan where he was able to get back in game playing shape. But the biggest win this week came from Poland who defeated a humble team from San Marino 10-0. Not doing so well in their respective brackets are Portugal and Sweeden who can’t seem to get above water, both of them tying 0-0 to each other, and the Czech Republic who once again lost to Slovakia.
In news closer to home, in the Concacaf, the United States, despite a lackluster appearance was able to salvage a point, by turning what seemed to be a sure defeat by El Salvador to a 2-2 tie and then turned their sights to Trinidad & Tobago beating them 3-0, thus maintaining their lead in its group. The most dissapointing news came from the Mexican camp who lost their first game against Costa Rica 2-0 and was humilliated in their second game by Honduras 3-1 prompting the firing of its Coach who I don’t feel deserved the firing. Mexico who currently doesn’t look to have the players to play at this level and with no changes in their horizon on this front, is fourth in their group of 6 teams, and looks to be in serious trouble for classifying for the world cup, despite this region having the most liberal of classification standards with three and a half teams classifying from the Concacaf. This number of slots being granted by the FIFA to the Concacaf who in my opinion is way too many slots given the level of soccer being displayed by this region. Some of those slots could and should have been granted to South America or even Europe who by the looks of things with the tough competition going on in these countries may leave some really good selections like Uruguay or Chile behind. Even teams of the caliber of Portugal, Sweeden, Russia, Czech Republic, Polland or even Italy, can find themselves staying home if they are not careful. Totally incomprehensible things in the world of International fútbol!!!
In the first round in South America, things went as expected, with Argentina beating up on a very timid selection from Venezuela 4-0, Brasil managed a 1-1tie against Ecuador in Quito, Uruguay shined this weekend against table leaders Paraguay beating them 2-0, while Colombia lifted the spirits of their fans by beating Bolivia 2-0 and Chile demonstrated their superiority against Peru 3-1.
The second round though brought about the humulliating defeat of Argentina 6-1 against Bolivia, a team who is not showing up much in the way of futbolistic prowess. The reason for this humilliating loss may have been the altitude of Bolivia’s Capital, La Paz, which Bolivia takes advantage of every time they have a powerhouse come to play them at home. But this can’t be a reason used by Mr. Maradona who in a show of political favoritism towards his buddy, Evo Morales, rather than futbolistic consideration for Bolivia’s opponents vehemently opposed a proposed suspension of this stadium by FIFA, for just that reason, the inhumane conditions of playing in that stadium for Bolivia’s opponents who because of the lack of oxygen have trouble breathing much less playing at that altitude. Now he must suffer his humillitating defeat in silence.
Colombia who seemed like it was over its bad days, lost to a Venezuelan team that came to play and scored 2 goals against them. The game who had all the billing of the game of the week Uruguay v Chile went on to a 0-0 tie with neither team hurting the other one. Brazil had no problems beating Peru 3-0 and Ecuador tied 1-1.
Now for the IN and OUT:
IN: The splendid, amazing times being enjoyed by Spain who is well on its way to history by surpasing all its past glory. Spain’s undefeated 31 games is historic and its Coach, Del Bosque’s undefeated run is at 9 of 9 tying Clemente’s glory days between 1994 – 1997, with the difference that Clemente’s Spanish team tied 11 times while Del Bosque’s team only has 3 ties with all the rest being wins.
OUT: The tragedy in Africa between Ivory Coach and Malawi where 22 people died and 132 were injured in the Stadium of Abidjan where a mob of 50,000 fans caused a wall to collapse by trying to get into a stadium that only fits 35,000. What’s worse is, that this tragedy wasn’t enough for officials to suspend the game where Chelsea’s Didier Drogba went on to score 2 goals and lead his team, Ivory Coast to a 5-0 win.

MINUTO 91
Minuto 91 esta semana se dedicará a narrarles todo lo que aconteció en las eliminatorias para Sur África 2010 alrededor del globo, estando en una semana para SOCCER AA de relax y con poca actividad futbolística, con entrenamientos de todos los equipos que próximamente enfrentaran el STATE CUP 2009.
Empecemos por el campeón de Europa, que en su doble tanda con Turquía y enfrentando un rival tan complicado que nunca se rinde, logró dos victoria ajustada sin brillar mucho como nos tiene acostumbrados, pero rumbo a su invicto histórico, esta es una España definitivamente de records. El Campeón Mundial no tuvo problemas al vencer a Montenegro por 2 goles a 0 en su primer encuentro y empatando a 1 con la dura Irlanda, de todas maneras el balance es positivo porque logro destacarse de 2 puntos de la misma Irlanda que es la que le pisa los talones. En otras Europeas tenemos la doble victoria del sub campeón Francia por 1 gol a 0 cada una, que también si no mostro un juego bonito, estas 2 victorias le sirvieron enormemente para ponerse otra vez en lucha para la clasificación de África 2010, Alemania sigue mostrando su poderío con 2 victorias contundentes al igual que Holanda e Inglaterra está mostrando una solidas escuadra en todas sus línea y confirmando la sabia decisión de Backham, de jugar a altos niveles en el Milan, donde volvió a tomar muy buena forma. Mientras que Portugal y Suecia no logran levantar cabeza empatando a 0 goles entre ambas, otra que anda en caída libre es Rep. Checa, que volvió a perder frente a Eslovaquia y la goleada del turno la proporcionó Polonia al vencer a la muy humilde selección de San Marino por 10 a 0.
En cambio por lo que se refiere a la Concacaf, los Estados Unidos jugando mal, lograron salvar una casi segura derrota, cuando lograron revertir el marcador de 2 goles en contra en un valioso empate a 2 frente al Salvador, pero en el segundo turno consiguieron una victoria por 3 a 0 con Trinidad & Tobago, manteniendo el liderato del grupo. Quién fue un verdadero desastre ilusionando en el primer partido frente a Costa Rica ganándole 2 a 0 fue México, que en su segundo juego fue humilladlo por Honduras por 3 a 1 al punto que provocó la despedida de su técnico, el cual no creo que tenía tanta culpa, más bien México está careciendo de jugadores de nivel y no creo que cambie nada en corto plazo, con esta derrota se coloca en cuarto lugar de seis equipos donde clasifican 3 y medio para la fase final del mundial, cantidad adjudicada por la FIFA de manera extremadamente generosa por el nivel de fútbol que muestra la Concacaf, pudiendo dejar un par de cupos a Sur América o a la misma Europa que en este año, por cómo van las cosas, podríamos no ver en un mundial selecciones como Uruguay o Chile que están jugando muy bien o Portugal, Suecia, Rusia, Rep. Checa, Polonia o la misma sub campeona mundial Francia. Cosas incomprensibles del fútbol!!!
Y en sur América la cosa fue de película, en la primera tanda no hubo grandes sorpresas, Argentina goleo a una muy tímida Venezuela 4 a 0, Brasil logró sacar un empate a 1 al Ecuador en el difícil campo de Quito por la altura, Uruguay mostro un excelente fútbol frente al líder Paraguay venciéndolo 2 a 0, Colombia ilusiono frente a Bolivia ganándole 2 a 0 y Chile también dio cátedra de fútbol ganándole 3 a 1 al Perú mostrando el buen nivel que ha alcanzado. Pero en la segunda vuelta llegó la escandalosa derrota de Argentina, una de las mejores selecciones en el mundo actualmente fue humillada por Bolivia 6 a 1, por una Bolivia que últimamente no está mostrando mayor cosa, el motivo parece ser la altura de su capital la Paz, que Bolivia aprovecha cada vez que le llega una selección poderosa, pero excusa que el Sr. Maradona no puede ni comentar por ser el líder futbolístico que se opuso a la suspensión de ese estadio por la FIFA, justamente por las condiciones inhumanas que es jugar en ese campo por la falta de oxigeno, que podría hasta llevar a la muerte a los jugadores, pero el Sr. Maradona en un acto político y no deportista, defendió como loco a su amigo Evo Morales, presidente de ese país y ahora tiene que asumir su derrota en silencio. Colombia, que parecía haber superado su ayuno de goles, cayó ante una Venezuela que ni se le pareció a la que jugó 3 días antes contra Argentina, encajándole 2 muy bonitos goles, el partido del la jornada que veía como protagonista a Uruguay y Chile, termino a 0 goles sin hacerse daño, mientras Brasil no tuvo problemas en superar a Perú por 3 a 0 y Ecuador - Paraguay también igualaron a 1 gol por bando.
Ahora la sección de lo IN y lo OUT:
IN: El momento esplendido que está atravesando la selección de España, que va en rumbo de batir todos sus records históricos para una selección de fútbol, llegando a 31 juegos sin perder y su técnico Del Bosque lleva de 9 sobre nueve 9, igualando así la selección del técnico Clemente entre los años 1994 y el 1997, con la diferencia que la España de Clemente obtuvo 11 empate, mientras que esta, solo han obtenido 3 empates el resto todas victorias.
OUT: La tragedia en el juego de eliminatorias en África entre Costa de Marfil y Malawi donde murieron 22 personas y 132 heridos en el estadio de Abidjan, una estampida antes de empezar el juego derrumbo un muro del estadio, por querer entrar en un estadio que solo permite 35.000 espectadores y fueron vendidos 50.000 entradas y lo peor que la tragedia no fue suficiente para suspender el juego, el cual ganó la Costa de Marfil del afamado jugador del Chelsea Drogba por 5 o 0, marcado el 2 goles.
